I am honored to be the recipient of the SWE Fellow Grade this year. This was not something that was ever on my radar, but over the many years of service to SWE, it is special to know that the SWE Fellows believe that I am deserving of this recognition.
While on this trip, I reflected on the importance of my SWE connections over my career. For example, two of the other 3 colleagues receiving recognitions this year, Britta Jost, Emerging Leader, and Sowmya Nagesh, Distinguished New Engineer, are SWE friends who I love dearly. I only met them through SWE Central Illinois and are collective involvement with professional development, outreach and networking activities. Even though we work for the same company, our paths have never crossed professionally.
While in Peoria, I also arranged some work meetings with new colleagues on a new project that we are kicking off. As I got to know my new colleague, Megan, she told me about a friend who is a current member of the SWE Tucson section but lives in California. I recognized the name of her friend as I have seen it on the roster and have heard other EC members mention her name with fondness. This is an example of what a truly small world we live in, and another SWE-ster connection.
While in Peoria, I hosted our scheduled October EC meeting via Teleconference, which was good since Mary-Helen ended up in Boston, I was in Peoria and other officers were able to call in from their homes to follow-up with plans for outreach, networking, professional development, awards & recognition, communication and other business items. I appreciate our EC and Committee leaders and members who are making the effort to make SWE Tucson a vibrant and thriving section. All members are welcome to participate in the monthly EC meeting. If you would like to attend, please send me a note and I will add you to the invite.
The WE19 Anaheim conference is just around the corner and many of us are making plans to attend. It would be wonderful if we could plan a networking lunch or coffee break. If you are planning to attend, please let us know by contacting the Secretary.
Congratulations to SWE Tucson member, Katherine Herrick, who will be receiving the Advocating for Women award at WE19. It will be a wonderful evening to celebrate with all the SWE Award winners on 9 November. Hope to see many of you there!
While Society Awards are wonderful, the awards & recognition committee have launched our local awards program to recognize local members who are deserving of being celebrated. If you know of a woman engineer who has demonstrated engineering excellence on the job, please write a short submission to explain why she is deserving of recognition. Also, if you know a member who has demonstrated support of SWE’s mission through service to SWE and support of our activities and community, please consider submitting their qualifications for the Distinguished Member Award. Nominations will remain open until 1 November.
It is an honor for me to serve as SWE Tucson President, and I hope to meet more of you in person at future events!
Cheers,
Carol
