WE18 Let’s Break Boundaries in Minneapolis was an incredible experience. With an attendance of over 14K, it was one of the largest conferences yet! The keynote speakers, Cindy Kent, former President & General Manager 3M, and Marillyn Hewson, CEO, Lockheed Martin, were very inspirational. The lessons they shared about achieving their career goals were excellent learning opportunities. Their talks were recorded and you can view them by selecting the links above from #WE18 website.
Our SWE Tucson section was well represented with at least 8 members attending. And it was a special evening on Friday, were we celebrated Dr. Mary Roybal receiving her Fellow grade! And Congratulations to Dr. Thomas Kennedy of Raytheon for receiving the Rodney D. Chip Memorial Award. His acceptance speech stressed the importance of diversity in leadership and you can watch this by clicking WE18 Awards Banquet (25 min in), and see Mary receiving her award (1hr 8 min).
While I was able to attend a few of the Plenary sessions, a big part of my experience was networking with colleagues from the US, Germany and China. As a recruiter at the career fair, I interacted with many talented new engineers who gave me hope for the future. I was able to connect with new friends and colleagues that were first time attendees and offer some guidance on how to make the most of the experience. And I had an interesting opportunity to connect with a male Faculty Advisor for the University of Idaho SWE Collegiate Section. He had a lot of questions about SWE and we talked for several hours about his challenges and concerns.
As I look at the SWE Conference 2018 magazine, which includes the conference schedule, I am overwhelmed with the incredible amount of programming that is packed into 3 days of activities. It is great that many of the sessions were taped and will be available through their virtual conference registration. This is how I plan to catch-up on the sessions that I was not able to attend in person.
The WE Local conferences will start in February and I will be attending the WE Local Denver 15-16 March. If you have any questions about how to approach your leadership to gain their support, please contact me. We can assist you with developing the business case to demonstrate the value of attending. And it is not to early to start planning for WE19 Conference in Anaheim CA!
Cheers,
Carol J Weber
